Alcohol and families

Constructed for Alcohol Awareness Week 2017 on the theme of ‘Alcohol and Families’, this collection embraces both major roles for the families of problem drinkers – as recipients of support and therapy to promote their own welfare, and as therapeutic agents engaged in promoting the drinker’s welfare through family therapy or less formal involvement in treatment. A collection starting with the analyses most recently added or updated, totalling today 82 documents.

REVIEW 2018 HTM file
Meta-analysis of the alliance–outcome relation in couple and family therapy

Amalgamation and review of research findings commissioned by the American Psychological Association reveals that working relationships in couple and family therapies are at least as important as in individual therapies. Practice recommendations will help therapists develop these relationships, augmenting the impacts of some of the most effective ways to treat substance use problems.

Drug Treatment Matrix cell A5: Interventions; Safeguarding the community

Seminal and key studies shedding light on treatment’s contribution to safeguarding the community and preventing crime. Preventing alcohol and tobacco exposed pregnancies: CHOICES Plus in primary care

Compared to brief advice, the CHOICES Plus intervention significantly lowered the risk of alcohol- and tobacco-exposed pregnancies among women in a low-income primary care population. This US-based trial illustrates the efficacy of a bundle of ‘pre-conception’ services for risky drinking, smoking, and ineffective contraception.

MATRIX CELL 2018 HTM file
Drug Treatment Matrix cell A4: Interventions; Psychosocial therapies

Seminal and key studies shedding light on the general principles underpinning psychosocial therapies and the effectiveness specific approaches. ’Individualise,’ is the overarching theme … and the consequent dangers of inflexibly following guidelines and research findings.

Alcohol interventions, alcohol policy and intimate partner violence: a systematic review

What constitutes ‘alcohol-related’ domestic abuse, and to what extent can interventions designed to reduce the harms of alcohol also reduce domestic abuse?

HOT TOPIC 2017 HTM file
Focus on the families

‘Hot topics’ offer background and analysis on important issues which sometimes generate heated debate. Both as a treatment resource for the patient and a group needing support in their own right, a UK report described families affected by substance use as the “forgotten” carers. Here we turn the focus on the “unheard and unseen victims when a loved one uses drugs or alcohol”.

COLLECTION 2017 HTM file
Couples therapies

‘Collections’ are customised Effectiveness Bank searches not available via the standard options in the search pages. Entries on one of only two types of therapies recommended for alcohol and/or drug users by NICE, the UK’s official health intervention advisers. Best known of these in the substance use sector focuses on a daily ritual in which the couple reaffirm and reinforce the user’s intention to stay drug-free/sober.
