STUDY 2010 HTM file
Personality-targeted interventions delay uptake of drinking and decrease risk of alcohol-related problems when delivered by teachers

O'Leary-Barrett M., Mackie C.J., Castellanos-Ryan N. et al.
Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry: 2010, 49(9), p. 954–963.
Addressing the substance use promoting tendencies of the personality traits of London secondary school pupils at particular risk of substance misuse led to fewer drinking and, among the drinkers, fewer drinking heavily. The study showed that school staff could effectively conduct the focus group interventions.

REVIEW 2013 HTM file
The comparative effectiveness of outpatient treatment for adolescent substance abuse: A meta-analysis

Tanner-Smith E.E., Wilson S.J., Lipsey M.W.
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment: 2013, 44, p. 145–158.
Multi-prong therapies centred on the family emerge as probably the most effective in this comprehensive and careful synthesis of the results of trials of non-residential programmes for substance using teenagers – but do the outcomes warrant the extra costs?

STUDY 2014 HTM file
Perceived peer drinking norms and responsible drinking in UK university settings

Robinson E., Jones A., Christiansen P. et al.
Substance Use and Misuse, 2014(49), p. 1376–1384.
Exposure to messages about responsible drinking norms had little effect on drinking perceptions and no positive effect on drinking intentions among students in this UK university, echoing the disappointing findings of other British trials.

STUDY 2016 HTM file
After FDAC: outcomes 5 years later (final report)

Harwin J., Alrouh B., Ryan M. et al.
Lancaster University, 2016
Five-year follow-up of London families finds better outcomes among those in the Family Drug and Alcohol Court than ordinary care proceedings.

REVIEW 2014 HTM file
Estimating the efficacy of Alcoholics Anonymous without self-selection bias: an instrumental variables re-analysis of randomized clinical trials

Humphreys K., Blodgett J.C., Wagner T.H.
Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research: 2014, 38(11), p. 2688–2694.
12-step fellowships offer a way to reconcile shrunken resources with the desire to get more patients safely out of treatment. Accounting for the self-selection bias which has obscured AA’s impacts, this synthesis of US trials finds that attending more meetings after treatment boosts abstinence. Why then is research equivocal on whether promoting attendance improves drink-related outcomes?

STUDY 1957 HTM file
A study of three types of group psychotherapy with hospitalized male inebriates

Ends E.J., Page, C.W.
Quarterly Journal of Studies on Alcohol: 1957, 18, p. 263–277.
Early US study uncovered for the Alcohol Treatment Matrix found a Rogerian client-centred therapy characterised by non-directive, empathic listening beneficially changed self-perceptions of alcohol-dependent patients and reduced relapse compared to approaches based on learning theory or psychoanalysis.

STUDY 2008 HTM file
Still hard to find reasons for matching patients to therapies

on the web
The UK Alcohol Treatment Trial has confounded expectations that a motivational approach would be preferable for unmotivated or hostile patients, while supportive social networks would be particularly important for patients lacking these to begin with.

HOT TOPIC 2017 HTM file
It’s magic: prevent substance use problems without mentioning drugs

Ashton M., Davies N.
‘Hot topics’ offer background and analysis on important issues which sometimes generate heated debate. Analyses the evidence leading to the realisation that focusing on drugs is not necessarily the best way to prevent problem drug use; youth programmes addressing underlying vulnerabilities and structural influences have growing research support.

HOT TOPIC 2017 HTM file
Residential rehabilitation: the high road to recovery?

Ashton M.
‘Hot topics’ offer background and analysis on important issues which sometimes generate heated debate. Asks whether residential rehabilitation is particularly suited to today’s abstinence-based recovery ambitions, and whether nevertheless these services are under threat, treated as a last resort rather than a front-line option.

STUDY 2006 HTM file
Effectiveness of nurse-led brief alcohol intervention: A cluster randomized controlled trial

Lock C.A., Kaner E., Heather N. et al.
Journal of Advanced Nursing: 2006, 54(4), p. 426–439.
Interventions delivered by nurses did lead to a reduction in excessive drinking in their patients, but there seemed to be no advantage of a structured brief intervention over standard advice.
