STUDY 2010 HTM file
Are effects from a brief multiple behavior intervention for college students sustained over time?

At a US university students at first cut back their drinking and cannabis use in response to a brief face-to-face fitness consultation, but the gains were no longer apparent a year after intervention. Yet still at that time they had at least experienced more positive trends in how they felt than students who had just read a fitness brochure.

STUDY 2010 HTM file
A brief image-based prevention intervention for adolescents

Across the sample, a brief face-to-face consultation highlighting how substance use might stop them becoming the sort of young adults they wanted to be generally did not prevent substance use among US high school pupils, but those already using substances were significantly more responsive, suggesting a selective if not a universal prevention role.

Applying positive psychology to alcohol-misusing adolescents: a group intervention

Conducted in England, this first study to test positive psychology approaches focused on strengths and wellbeing in the treatment of substance use problems found that a small group of young drinkers and drug users responded well, with substantial remission in alcohol dependence despite the non-substance focus of the group therapy.

STUDY 2010 HTM file
Long-term effect of community-based treatment: evidence from the adolescent outcomes project

The title speaks of long-term effects but in fact there were none from sending young US substance users to a youth therapeutic community specialising in substance use problems compared to non-specialist group homes; early gains had all eroded, an instance of the general difficulty of sustaining youth treatment outcomes.

REVIEW 2010 HTM file
Treatment of cannabis use among people with psychotic or depressive disorders: a systematic review

A review of psychosocial and medication-based treatments for people with co-occurring cannabis use and mental health issues reveals some positive results, but a need for more research.

REVIEW 2010 HTM file
Testing for cannabis in the work-place: a review of the evidence

A review of 20 years of research on cannabis testing at work found that the patchy evidence permitted few strong conclusions about effectiveness. Given the lack of evidence, it seems wise for UK guidance to limit workplace testing to those who really warrant it because of their jobs, rather than advocating widespread testing as a deterrent.

REVIEW 2010 HTM file
Assessment and management of cannabis use disorders in primary care

A brief clinical review outlining the harms associated with cannabis use, and the optimal approaches for assessing and managing problem cannabis use in UK primary care.

REVIEW 2010 HTM file
Research Review: The effectiveness of multidimensional family therapy in treating adolescents with multiple behavior problems – a meta-analysis

Review finds multidimensional family therapy more effective than group therapies and other psychosocial therapies, particularly among adolescents with severe substance use and other behavioural problems.

STUDY 2009 HTM file
Evaluation of the mandatory drug testing of arrestees pilot

Scotland withdrew funding when it saw this evaluation of testing for heroin/cocaine use on arrest. It looked like a very expensive way to get a few users in to treatment; at two of the three sites, six to eight times more costly per treatment entry than voluntary referral.

STUDY 2009 HTM file
Randomized controlled trial of a cognitive-behavioral motivational intervention in a group versus individual format for substance use disorders

For US problem drinkers and drug users not at the severest end of the spectrum, four sessions of group were as effective as four of individual therapy but took much fewer therapist hours per patient. The little research we have suggests this a common finding, commending group approaches on cost-effectiveness grounds.
