STUDY 2012 HTM file
The impact of treatment on reconviction for drug-related offences

England's National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse finds known offenders substantially less likely to be reconvicted after (re)starting addiction treatment, especially when they stay in treatment or complete it after overcoming their dependence.

DOCUMENT 2011 HTM file
Drug treatment and recovery in 2010–11

England's National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse argues that the efforts of users, workers and service providers to put recovery at the heart of treatment are paying off in the form of more drug dependent patients successfully completing and leaving treatment and not having to return after relapse.

STUDY 2011 HTM file
The effect of using assessment instruments on substance-abuse outpatients' adherence to treatment: a multi-centre randomised controlled trial

Young adult multi-drug users in Belgium who often soon dropped out of treatment were much more likely to stay in counselling when their therapists structured sessions by feeding back assessments of their motivation and recovery resources.

REVIEW 2011 HTM file
Heroin maintenance for chronic heroin-dependent individuals

Update of the first authoritative review to combine results from all trials to date of long-term heroin prescribing for the management of heroin addiction finds important advantages for seemingly intractable patients previously failed by methadone, including reduced illegal drug use.

STUDY 2010 HTM file
Examining differential effects of psychosocial treatments for cocaine dependence: an application of latent trajectory analyses

Advanced statistical techniques applied to data from a landmark US cocaine therapy study revealed three typical recovery trajectories; at the extremes patients who fared best and worst did so whatever the therapy, but in the middle a consistent approach (in this case, 12-step) which matched cultural expectations worked best.

The forgotten carers: support for adult family members affected by a relative's drug problems

From national and local guidance, commissioners and services, a rounded picture of how much Britain knows about and responds to the needs of the relatives of problem drug users. Increasing recognition of needs has generally yet to be matched by systematic needs assessments or service provision.

STUDY 2011 HTM file
An experimental demonstration of training probation officers in evidence-based community supervision

For the first time this Canadian randomised study has shown that training probation officers in the risk-need-responsivity model of offender supervision can not only improve their skills and sharpen their practice, but also reduce the recidivism of the offenders they supervise, among whom substance use was a major issue.

REVIEW 2012 HTM file
Assessing the effectiveness of drug courts on recidivism: a meta-analytic review of traditional and non-traditional drug courts

Synthesising the results of 154 studies, the most thorough and extensive investigation of the crime-reduction credentials of drug courts finds the evidence bulky but lacking quality, yet sufficient to support courts for adult illegal drug users if not (or not yet) teenagers or drink-drivers.

STUDY 2011 HTM file
Targeting dispositions for drug-involved offenders: a field trial of the Risk and Needs Triage (RANT)

Drug-involved offenders have different needs related to their offending (in particular for addiction treatment) and pose different levels of risk for a return to crime after usual sentencing options. This US study confirmed that needs and risk are independent dimensions which can be measured and used to adjust sentencing to reduce recidivism.

STUDY 2009 HTM file
Therapist behavior as a predictor of black and white caregiver responsiveness in multisystemic therapy

How to get parents more engaged in becoming a positive influence over their seriously delinquent drug abusing teenagers through family therapy integrated in to a US juvenile drug court. Some of the therapist tactics expected to work did deepen engagement, others did not.
