Yes, they work better than usual or individualised approaches, but not much and not always, and most of the research has been done by people who stand to gain from positive findings.

Though some studies may have been persuasive, this review of recent attempts to find which therapeutic approaches work best for young risky drinkers was unable to reach firm conclusions due to variability in the studies and methodological inadequacies. Still, the tentative conclusions accord with those in UK guidance.

Given effective supervision from family or clinicians to help ensure patients keep taking the tablets, this first systematic synthesis of research finds that on average the drug disulfiram, which produces an unpleasant physical reaction to drinking, does act as an aid to abstinence in the treatment of alcohol dependence.
